Carson Optical approached us in 2008 to redesign a pair of binoculars with a sense fresh styling that would appeal to the bird watcher and the hunter alike. Past binoculars suffered from awkwardness of form and inability to sit in the hands comfortably. To solve this, SurfaceID created dozens of foam and CNC models while at the same time generating hundreds of sketches. What you see here was the result; a sophisticated but informal pair of ergo binoculars.
Carson Optical supplies binoculars, magnifiers and other consumer optics to birders, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. In 2008, Carson asked SurfaceID for a new pair of binoculars with fresh styling that would appeal to the bird watcher and the hunter alike.
The real brief was the hand. Earlier binoculars often looked awkward and never quite settled into the grip. SurfaceID set out to give Carson a form that is sophisticated but informal, and that sits naturally in both hands.
SurfaceID explored the form in hundreds of sketches, then built the strongest directions as dozens of foam and CNC-machined models. Physical models show how a shape fills the hands in a way no sketch can, so each round of models fed the next round of drawings.
The result is a pair of ergonomic binoculars with a body shaped to sit comfortably in the hands and a clean, modern look that suits a morning of birding as well as a day in the field.
