The Janam XG100 offers utmost practicality as well as a rugged and alluring aesthetic that sets it apart from the competition. The balance of the unit is vastly enhanced through an ergonomic design that was achieved by moving the battery into the handle and by adding tail lights and a vibration alert to aid in positive scan recognition. Its charging base was also designed with modularity in mind. Not only did it have to reflect the aesthetic characteristics of the Janam XG100, but it had to be versatile in its usability. Janam Technologies builds rugged mobile computers that scan barcodes and communicate wirelessly. In January 2009, at the National Retail Federation’s convention in New York, it introduced the XG100, a gun-shaped mobile computer for warehouses, distribution centres and loading docks, where workers scan all shift long.
SurfaceID’s industrial design is built around one key decision: moving the battery into the pistol grip. Janam introduced the XG100 as the only rugged gun-shaped mobile computer with its battery in the grip, which lowers the centre of gravity and makes the device feel light and balanced in the hand.
With the battery in the grip, the upper body stays as slim as a rugged PDA, leaving room for a wider keypad with larger keys. The XG100 withstands multiple 6-foot (1.8 m) drops to concrete and 2,000 tumbles in a test chamber, is sealed to IP64, and was introduced as the first rugged mobile computer with an Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) tag built into its body.
Bright LED tail lights confirm each scan, even when reading barcodes overhead, and a vibration alert confirms it in noisy environments. The charging base matches the XG100’s look and does double duty: the single-slot cradle charges the device and a spare battery in its own well.
