The Story Behind the Immersive Water Therapy Concept

This concept study explored a new kind of hydrotherapy: a floating unit that supports the body in the water while pump-fed jets massage the back and legs.

SurfaceID led the brainstorming and concept sketching, developing a series of numbered concepts, from a flat raft to reclining chairs and seats that leave the user half underwater. Each one is annotated with how it would float, move water and be manufactured.

Concept 5: The Raft

A flat float with jets set into the back section, fed by a hose through plastic tubes inside the body, with a rear dock designed for rotational moulding.

Seated Concepts

Other directions seat the user in a fibreglass chair with jets in the backrest, a pivoting support, a cup holder and a pump at the base.

Modular by Design

A dock module with an adjustable headrest clips onto the raft, the back can be adjusted, jet panels are removable, and a pump module attaches from below.

Jets and Controls

One concept adds a removable canopy, armrests, a cup holder and a digital control panel, with removable jet panels in fixed, rotating or oscillating versions and a pump attached from behind.

A One-Piece Chair

A rotomoulded chair combines seat and headrest in one floating shell, fed by a hose, and is studied in side and front views at the waterline.

Adjustable and Expandable

An adjustable float allows multiple positions, extra float modules add buoyancy, and removable jet panels allow custom jets for different versions of the product.

Resting or Seated

An adjustable rotomoulded back lets the user switch between a reclined resting position and a more upright seat position, with jets in the backrest, armrests with a cup holder and an iPod dock.

Concept 6: Half Underwater

Concept 6 revises the idea for a user sitting half underwater: a fibreglass chair with headrest, jets and cup holders set into a raft with armrests. An exploded view details the removable back jets, digital control, leg rest and leg jet panel, rotomoulded raft, extra float modules and a pump on the bottom.

Product Design Challenges Behind the Tstand Base: Ergonomics, Sink Marks, Snap-Fits, and Lifters

What it took to make a simple-looking injection molded part look clean, feel solid, and come out of the mold. Tstand looks simple. It is a tablet stand that rests on your chest while you lie in bed or on the couch, so you can watch a movie without holding the device or craning your […]
