Concept sketches & advanced engineering.
An osmometer measures osmolality, the concentration of dissolved particles in a fluid. Clinical and research laboratories use it to test samples such as serum, plasma and urine. The instrument has to be precise, easy to load and simple enough to run many times a day.
SurfaceID took this osmometer from concept sketches to advanced engineering. The team explored many form directions on paper and laid out the internal mechanism in 3D. From there, it refined a compact benchtop instrument with a display above a front sample station.
Development began with wide sketch exploration: upright and wedge-shaped bodies, open and enclosed sample areas, and different relationships between the screen, the sample station and the housing.
The internal architecture was modelled in 3D, placing the mechanism and electronics first, so the enclosure could wrap closely around them.
In the final direction, the display sits above the sample station. The operator can load a sample and follow the measurement from the same position.
Rendered studies compared variations of the front profile and the sample area. They led to a clean white benchtop body with blue accents, ready for detailed engineering.

What it took to make a simple-looking injection molded part look clean, feel solid, and come out of the mold. Tstand looks simple. It is a tablet stand that rests on your chest while you lie in bed or on the couch, so you can watch a movie without holding the device or craning your […]
