SurfaceID teamed up with Kaz scientists to develop a truly innovative bug trap. The CT100 is a new kind of CO2 trap that specifically targets mosquitoes through aesthetically integrated new science and engineering. A seamless collaboration with Kaz’s in-house and Asia-based teams allowed us the reduction of overall part count and ease of assembly.
Kaz brought SurfaceID in to develop the Stinger CT100 to production, on a tight schedule and with a higher bar for aesthetics. The brief was to enhance and develop the design, not start over. SurfaceID took on the mechanical design and worked closely with Kaz’s scientists and its in-house and Asia-based teams. Together they reduced the overall part count and made the trap easier to assemble, while giving the trap a cleaner, more resolved appearance.
The CT100 mimics human breathing. It burns propane to produce carbon dioxide, adds heat, moisture, a contrasting colour and shape and an octenol and lactic-acid lure, then vacuums female mosquitoes into a basket where they dehydrate and die. The project met its deadline, budget and marketing approval, and Kaz asked SurfaceID to design its next product, the Stinger MK100, from scratch.
While developing the main body, the team found that the bowl put too much stress on its flange, which had no reinforcement. The fix became part of the look: aesthetic ribs that connect the bowl to the legs.
The self-locking Bug Basket twists open as it locks into the trap and twists shut when it is removed, so no live mosquitoes escape when it’s time to empty it.
The CT100 assembles without tools and protects up to one acre. Child-secure controls and indicator lights for propane, the Bug Basket and the lure keep operation simple. In SmartTemp mode, the burner shuts down to save gas when the temperature leaves the 50 to 95 °F (10 to 35 °C) range where mosquitoes are active. The fan keeps running so captured mosquitoes stay in the basket.

What it took to make a simple-looking injection molded part look clean, feel solid, and come out of the mold. Tstand looks simple. It is a tablet stand that rests on your chest while you lie in bed or on the couch, so you can watch a movie without holding the device or craning your […]
