Preliminary 3D development of a helmet following safety compliance standards

SurfaceID provided industrial design and mechanical engineering support for the development of a next-generation protective respirator system for military applications. The objective was to improve the comfort, ergonomics, and performance of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) protection while reducing the weight and bulk associated with conventional powered air-purifying respirators.

The system integrates a compact powered blower directly into the mask’s filtration system, eliminating the need for the larger external blower units, hoses, and battery packs typically worn on the body. Filtered air is directed across the nose cup and face to improve airflow and thermal comfort. During exhalation, clean filtered air is diverted into the eye cavity, creating positive pressure that helps prevent outside contaminants from entering if the mask seal is compromised.

Through the product development process, SurfaceID contributed to the integration, packaging, ergonomics, and physical design of the system while addressing the demanding requirements of military use. Testing demonstrated improved wearer comfort while maintaining or improving protection during activities such as running, crawling, rifle exercises, and combat maneuvers. The technology was developed with future integration into next-generation helmet, communications, and intelligent respiratory protection systems in mind.
