Concept sketches & advanced engineering. Concept sketches & advanced engineering of a handheld sensing unit.
The Handheld Isothermal Silver Standard Sensor (HISSS) was a DARPA program to identify biological-warfare agents, including bacteria, viruses and toxins, with a handheld device. The goal was a fast, lightweight sensor that approaches the sensitivity and accuracy of laboratory measurements.
SurfaceID contributed concept sketches and advanced engineering for the handheld sensing unit, turning complex detection hardware into a compact instrument with a clear display and simple controls.
DARPA structured HISSS in four phases: biochemical test development and laboratory proof of concept, a demonstration in a fluidic testbed, fluidic design and system refinement, and finally the construction and testing of a prototype system.
SurfaceID’s sketches explored how the unit would be held, read and operated in the field. Advanced engineering then developed the enclosure around the system’s internal components, as the wireframe and renderings on this page show.

What it took to make a simple-looking injection molded part look clean, feel solid, and come out of the mold. Tstand looks simple. It is a tablet stand that rests on your chest while you lie in bed or on the couch, so you can watch a movie without holding the device or craning your […]
