A human-centered cockpit design using advanced visualization techniques for 3D spatial analysis.
The pilot house is where a vessel is commanded. The helm, navigation displays, radar and communications all have to be within reach and readable at a glance, often in heavy weather. SurfaceID carried out the preliminary 3D development of an ergonomic pilot house for the US Coast Guard, designing the cockpit around the people who work in it.
Using advanced visualization techniques for 3D spatial analysis, the team modelled the entire console in context: a central helm flanked by navigation and radar displays, a pilot’s seat and a second crew station, all under a wraparound band of windows.
Seated and standing digital human figures were placed in the model to study reach to the controls, sightlines to the displays and through the windows, and the space each crew member needs to move. Plan and elevation views let the team check the layout from every side before anything was built.
