HD Radio lets FM stations broadcast in digital, adding extra multicast channels and sending song information to the receiver’s screen. In 2008, iTunes Tagging added a new trick: press Tag when you hear a song you like, the receiver saves it, and the track appears in iTunes the next time you sync your iPod, ready to preview and buy.
SurfaceID designed a compact HD Radio receiver built around that idea: a pocket-sized unit with a control ring for play, pause, volume and track skipping, and a dedicated Tag button, shown here with an iPod nano.
SurfaceID carried the receiver from industrial design into 3D engineering, packaging the circuit board, controls and connectors inside the compact two-tone housing, then built prototypes to check the look, feel and fit.
