Plantaform™ is reimagining how fresh food can be grown at home through an innovative smart indoor gardening system powered by fogponics. Rather than using soil or conventional hydroponics, the system delivers water and nutrients directly to plant roots through a nutrient-rich fog. This highly efficient growing method allows users to grow up to 15 plants at once—including herbs, leafy greens, vegetables, and edible flowers—indoors throughout the year, while automating lighting, irrigation, and environmental monitoring.
SurfaceID worked intimately with the Plantaform team throughout the development of the Smart Indoor Garden, providing the mechanical engineering and industrial design required to transform their innovative fogponics technology into a sophisticated consumer product. Our team was deeply integrated into the development process, working through the many interconnected mechanical, functional, manufacturing, and aesthetic challenges required to bring an entirely new type of indoor growing appliance to market.
From a mechanical engineering perspective, the product presented a complex packaging challenge. SurfaceID engineered the integration of the fogponics system, water reservoir, lighting, electronics, sensors, airflow, growing chamber, access panels, and structural components within a compact enclosure. Water management, sealing, condensation, ventilation, assembly, serviceability, and component accessibility all had to be carefully considered while maintaining the clean exterior form. Extensive iterative engineering and prototyping allowed the architecture to evolve as the technology itself continued to develop.
SurfaceID was also responsible for the industrial design and physical user experience of the product. With such a technically complex system, a major focus was making the device simple, intuitive, and approachable. We carefully considered the entire growing cycle—from setup and inserting new plants to adding water and nutrients, harvesting, cleaning, maintenance, and starting a new cycle. Particular attention was given to making mechanical components easy to access, remove, clean, and reinstall, while ensuring instructions and physical interactions clearly guided the user. At the same time, we developed the distinctive form, proportions, and surfaces to create a product that felt less like agricultural equipment and more like a premium contemporary appliance. The result was a highly sophisticated growing system that remained remarkably simple to own and operate.
Through close collaboration with Plantaform, SurfaceID helped carry the product through iterative industrial design, mechanical engineering, prototyping, refinement, and preparation for manufacturing. The result is a highly integrated product in which technology, engineering, and industrial design work together as a single system—helping Plantaform bring fogponics out of the laboratory and into the home. The Plantaform Smart Indoor Garden went on to receive the CES 2025 Best of Innovation Award, recognizing the innovation and design behind this new approach to growing fresh food indoors.
